The
Sugar River Valley Chapter of
Pheasants
Forever
has been actively working to increase wild pheasant
populations in South Central Wisconsin for 20
years. Our Annual
Banquet is scheduled for October 6th
at Lelle's in Woodford. Copy the 2007
Sugar River Valley Annual Banquet ticket form and send it in
today We have monthly
chapter meetings the first Tuesday of the month 7pm
at the Argyle Rod & Gun Club. The chapter is well on
its way to $250,000 worth of local
habitat work done in the last decade
plus. We have been involved with establishing over 3,000 acres
of Prairie Grasses, 35,000 trees and over 1000 Food
Plots over the years.
The DNR rewarded the chapter
for its early habitat work by stocking almost 2000 F1 generation
Genetic Wild Captured Pheasants from Iowa in the North
Monroe, & West Monroe Release Areas. Each year in the last half of April and
early May, the chapter performs Pheasant Crow Counts at the break of
day for the DNR & Year after year these areas are always
the highest counts in the state usually 3-5 times higher than most
other study areas. This year I counted 76 pheasants in the
field you see above after the December snows. The closest
release point was 4 miles away and the last stocking 4 years
ago.
The Chapter has also been very
active in local youth conservation education and also has been
deeply involved in the Leopold Education
Project which is a large part of Pheasants Forever
Youth Program. 4 Facilitators from the chapter have been
trained and all 4 have also attended the Advanced LEP
Workshop. This has led to the development of 2 school
prairies.
A core of over a dozen
chapter
members have also been the driving force in
putting on at least a half dozen major events including several huge
local scouting camporees
with hundreds of kids involved in each event.
The most recent was a Boy Scout Council
Camporee with over 1600 kids mentored in outdoor
skills.
We were instrumental, together
with the Argyle Rod & Gun
Club and Green
County Conservation League, in organizing a yearly
youth
hunt for pheasants in the early fall, the
last one had around 40 kids attend what ended up being a all day
program. We also helped start and participated in Youth Turkey Hunts
The chapter has been involved
with controlled
burning for many years and has its own
equipment which we have been known to help out with.
We own a No-till Corn Planter,
a regular Corn Planter, Broadcast
Seeders and spraying
equipment as well as several different types
of seeds and several food plot mixes that we distribute free of
charge.
