Erosion
Control & Stream Bank Improvement was needed at Savanna Springs because of years of
heavy cattle grazing which had broken down stream banks and
led to some channeling of water flowing down the
hillside. A 100 year rain about 10 years ago dumped 15"
rain in the area overnight. The result was a huge
washout which produced a gorge 200 feet long 20 or more feet across
and as deep as 12 feet. Here is a small area near the
bottom.

It took A day of Bull Dozing to fill
in the gorge. A large shallow water scrape
was made in the adjacent
wetland & the rich soil was spread out over the area
to work as topsoil. A combination of warm & cold
weather grasses were planted to prevent further erosion. The
pond filled in immediately & numerous wetland plants were
added making it a popular rest stop & home for Cranes, Ducks
& Geese.

Extensive Stream Bank Erosion had
also occurred & so extensive Rip-Rapping
was done to protect the stream banks and Lunker Structures were
placed for habitat. |
